Community Guidelines
OYSTR exists for one reason: to help people pursue the things that matter to them. These Guidelines protect that space. They are not a long list of rules — they are a description of the community we are building together.

1. Our community, in plain language
OYSTR is a space for people who have something they want to do to impact the world — and who are ready to stop waiting for permission.
The people who use this platform are pursuing real purposeful goals: learning a language, supporting a cause, building a business, running a marathon, rebuilding a relationship, writing a book, seeing the Northern Lights. All of them deserve a community that takes them seriously.
That is the community we are asking you to help build. These Guidelines exist to make sure everyone on OYSTR feels safe enough to be honest about what they want, and supported enough to actually go after it.
2. What OYSTR is — and what it is not
OYSTR is
- A platform for genuine personal goals and life ambitions
- A community built around encouragement, accountability, and authentic progress
- A space where non-profit organizations can rally community support for meaningful causes
- A place where companies can participate in community impact in a transparent, human way
OYSTR is not
- A crowdfunding platform. Moonshots are goals, not fundraising campaigns. Fuel is community support, not a donation mechanism.
- A social media feed for general content. Every post should connect to a goal.
- An advertising platform. CSR Partners participate as community members, not advertisers.
- An anonymous platform. Authenticity is a core value. Fake accounts and fake goals are not welcome.
- A platform for self-promotion without substance. Follower counts, vanity metrics, and content designed to impress rather than share progress do not belong here.
3. What is always welcome
These are the things that make OYSTR what it is. More of this, always.
Honest goals
A Moonshot that reflects something you genuinely want. Not what sounds impressive. Not what will get the most Stars. What you actually want.
Honest progress
Storytime Logs that tell the truth about where you are. Including the hard parts, the setbacks, the pivots. A community that only hears about wins learns nothing useful.
Genuine support
Encouragement that means something. Fuel that adds real value — a skill, a connection, advice from someone who has been there. The kind of support you would actually want to receive.
Constructive disagreement
You can respectfully push back on someone's approach, offer an alternative perspective, or ask a hard question. Disagreement that comes from caring about someone's success is welcome. Disagreement that is really just criticism dressed up as concern is not.
Vulnerability
Sharing that your goal is harder than you thought. That you are stuck. That you are scared. That you failed and are starting over. This is the most valuable thing on the platform. Protect it in others. Share it yourself.
Diversity of goals
There is no hierarchy of ambition on OYSTR. A Moonshot to visit every province in Canada is not less worthy than a Moonshot to run a marathon. A quiet personal goal is not less worthy than a public social mission. Every genuine goal is welcome.
4. What is never allowed
Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and child exploitation
Any content that sexually exploits or depicts minors — in any form, in any context — results in immediate permanent account termination and is reported to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and law enforcement without exception and without notice.
Credible threats of violence
Threats directed at a specific person or group that could reasonably be interpreted as genuine intent to cause physical harm. This includes threats delivered through private messages, Capsule messages, Moonshot descriptions, or Log entries.
Terrorism and violent extremism
Content that promotes, glorifies, recruits for, or provides material support to terrorist organizations or violent extremist movements. This includes content that incites others to commit acts of violence in the name of an ideological, political, or religious cause.
Hate speech
Content that dehumanizes a person or group based on a protected characteristic, including race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or age. Criticism of ideas, institutions, or practices is not hate speech. Attacking the humanity of people is.
Non-consensual intimate imagery
Sharing, threatening to share, or soliciting intimate images of another person without their consent. This applies regardless of whether the content is real or digitally created.
Doxxing
Publishing another person's private information — home address, phone number, workplace, financial information, identification documents, or other personally identifying details — without their consent and with intent to harm or expose.
Content that exploits minors in any form
Beyond CSAM, any content that grooms, manipulates, or endangers minors — including attempts to establish inappropriate relationships with minors or to extract information from them under false pretenses.
Large-scale coordinated fraud
Operating a network of fake accounts, coordinating inauthentic engagement at scale, or running any systematic scheme designed to deceive users or manipulate the platform.
5. Content that requires care
These topics are not prohibited, but they require thoughtfulness. Content in these areas may be reviewed by our Trust & Safety team. If you post in these areas, please be accurate, be responsible, and consider the impact on people reading your content.
Self-harm and mental health
You can write honestly about your mental health journey, including struggles with depression, anxiety, grief, or past self-harm. What is not acceptable is content that provides instructions for self-harm, glorifies self-destructive behaviour, or could trigger or encourage harm in others. If your goal involves mental health recovery, write it with care and with hope.
If you are in crisis, please reach out to a support line. In Canada: Crisis Services Canada at 1-833-456-4566.
Eating disorders and body image
Moonshots related to health, fitness, and body goals are welcome. Content that promotes extreme restriction, dangerous diet practices, or body shaming — directed at yourself or others — is not. OYSTR is a platform for goals that improve your life, not goals that put your health at risk.
Dangerous activities
Some Moonshots involve physical risk — extreme sports, long-distance solo travel, ambitious physical challenges. These are welcome on OYSTR. What is not welcome is content that encourages others to take dangerous risks without appropriate safety context, or that glamorizes recklessness.
Sensitive personal disclosures
Sharing something deeply personal — a health diagnosis, a family crisis, a past trauma — as part of your Moonshot journey is brave and valuable. Be thoughtful about what you share regarding other people, and about disclosures that could affect your safety or relationships in ways you have not considered.
Controversial topics
OYSTR is a goal platform, not a debate platform. You are welcome to have Moonshots connected to causes you believe in. You are not welcome to use your Moonshots or Capsules to conduct sustained political advocacy, recruit people to ideological positions, or push divisive content. The goal should be the point, not the controversy.
Misinformation
Content that is factually incorrect and that could cause real harm — incorrect medical advice, false claims about public figures, fabricated safety information — is not welcome. Stating a belief or opinion is different from stating a falsehood as fact.
6. Moonshots — specific rules
What makes a valid Moonshot
- It represents something you genuinely want to accomplish
- It has a meaningful end date — a real deadline you are committing to, or at least milestone dates
- It is your goal, not a goal you are posting on behalf of someone else without their knowledge
- It is specific enough to be pursued (not "be a better person" but "read 12 books this year")
What makes an invalid Moonshot
- A Moonshot created primarily to receive Fuel without a genuine underlying goal
- A Moonshot used as an advertising vehicle for a product or service
- A Moonshot that is actually a petition, a fundraising campaign, or a platform for content not connected to a personal goal
- A Moonshot created on behalf of another person without their knowledge or consent
- Duplicate Moonshots created to game the Dream Charts
- A Moonshot with a fabricated or misleading title designed to attract attention
- A post designed to attract attention or beg for attention
Content standards for Moonshots
- Your Moonshot title and description must accurately represent your goal
- Storytime Logs must be genuine updates, not promotional content
- Cover images must be yours or used with permission. No stock photos that misrepresent your situation.
- Hashtags must be relevant to your actual goal. Hashtag spam to boost visibility is not permitted.
- Cover images must not be AI generated
Moonshots that will be removed
- Moonshots that contain content from Section 4 (never allowed)
- Moonshots that are clearly fake or deceptive
- Moonshots used as a primary vehicle for spam, scams, or fraud
- Moonshots with AI images or videos
7. Capsules — specific rules
A Capsule is a private community built around a single goal. It should feel like the best version of a group chat — focused, supportive, and honest. These rules apply to everyone inside a Capsule, including Admins and Navigators.
For everyone in a Capsule
- Stay connected to the goal. Capsules are not general chat rooms. Keep conversations relevant to the Moonshot.
- Be supportive, not performative. Genuine encouragement is welcome. Empty flattery that adds no value is noise.
- Disagree respectfully. You can question someone’s approach without attacking them.
- Do not share another Crew member’s private disclosures outside the Capsule without their permission.
- Do not use the Capsule to solicit business.
- Report content that concerns you.
For Capsule Admins and Navigators
- Use your moderation powers in good faith. They exist to protect the space around the Moonshot, not to silence people who disagree with you.
- Do not mute or remove Crew members as retaliation for legitimate criticism.
- Do not appoint Navigators with the intent to conduct coordinated harassment.
- Document the reason for every moderation action. The moderation log exists to ensure accountability.
- If a situation is beyond your Capsule-level authority, refer it to OYSTR Trust & Safety via the report flow.
What will result in removal from a Capsule or the platform
- Harassment or sustained targeting of another Crew member
- Sharing another member’s private information without consent
- Spam or coordinated off-topic flooding
- Any content from Section 4 (never allowed)
- Abuse of Admin or Navigator powers
8. Fuel — specific rules
Fuel is how the community supports Dreamers. It comes in three forms: Fuel in Kind (resources, advice, tools), Fuel in Service (skills and time), and Fuel in Cash (monetary contributions). Each has its own integrity requirements.
For everyone sending Fuel
- Fuel what you genuinely want to support. Do not use Fuel to establish false obligations or to manipulate a Dreamer.
- Fuel in Kind and Fuel in Service must represent genuine offers. Do not offer resources you cannot or do not intend to deliver.
- Do not use Fuel as a pretext for unsolicited contact, sales, or solicitation.
- Cash Fuel contributions are final. Do not use them as leverage or threaten to reverse them.
For Dreamers receiving Fuel
- A Moonshot is a goal, not a fundraising pitch. Do not frame your Moonshot primarily around what you hope to receive.
- If you receive Fuel in Kind or in Service, acknowledge it. Ignoring offers from community members who gave their time is disrespectful.
- Cash Fuel received must not be solicited under false pretenses. Misrepresenting your goal to attract financial support is fraud.
Prohibited Fuel behaviour
- Using fake accounts to Fuel your own Moonshot
- Coordinating with others to exchange Fuel in a way designed to game engagement metrics
- Offering Fuel in exchange for Stars, Crew memberships, or other engagement — this is metric manipulation
- Using the Fuel system to launder money or conduct financial fraud
9. NFP Partners — specific rules
Verified non-profit organizations bring an important dimension to OYSTR — they connect individual Dreamers to causes larger than themselves. With that comes additional responsibility.
What NFP Partners must do
- Maintain your registered non-profit status in good standing throughout your use of the platform
- Represent your organization honestly — your Moonshots must reflect genuine organizational goals
- Be transparent about the impact of the Fuel received through the platform
- Ensure all content you post meets these Community Guidelines, including the same content standards that apply to individual Dreamers
- Designate at least one authorized account holder who is responsible for the account’s compliance
What NFP Partners must not do
- Use the platform primarily as a fundraising tool without a genuine community goal
- Misrepresent your organization’s registration status, size, or impact
- Post content that serves a commercial interest disguised as a charitable one
- Use your Verified NFP status to pressure Dreamers into making contributions
- Create multiple organizational accounts to multiply platform visibility artificially
10. CSR Partners — specific rules
Companies participate in OYSTR as community members, not advertisers. The "Fueled by [Company]" badge is not an advertising placement — it is a declaration of genuine community support. It comes with obligations.
What CSR Partners must do
- Fuel Moonshots that genuinely align with your company’s values and community mission
- Be transparent about who you are — your company profile must accurately represent your organization
- Ensure all content you post or endorse meets these Community Guidelines
- Honor offers of Fuel, in Kind, in cash or in Service, that you make publicly through the platform
What CSR Partners must not do
- Use the platform primarily as an advertising or brand visibility channel
- Target individual Dreamers with unsolicited commercial communications
- Use Capsule access or Crew membership to collect personal data about Dreamers for use outside the platform
- Fuel Moonshots in which your company has an undisclosed financial interest
- Instruct employees to Fuel company-linked Moonshots without disclosing the relationship
11. What happens when rules are broken
We believe in proportionate consequences. A first-time minor violation is handled differently from a pattern of serious abuse. Here is how we think about it.
| Consequence | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Warning | First-time minor violations. Private notification with explanation and a clear statement of what must change. |
| Content removal | Content that violates these Guidelines, regardless of account history. Content is removed; a placeholder appears: "This content was removed." Owner is notified with reason and appeal rights. |
| Temporary suspension (24 hours) | A minor violation. Account interactions restricted — you can still browse OYSTR, but cannot star, crew, fuel, orbit, echo, log, comment, or message. |
| Temporary suspension (7 days) | A moderate violation, or repeated minor violations after a warning. Same restriction on interactions as above, for a longer period. |
| Temporary suspension (30 days) | A serious violation, or repeated violations after a shorter suspension. Same restriction on interactions as above. |
| Permanent termination | Content from Section 4 (never allowed), large-scale fraud, continued violations after a 30-day suspension, or any behaviour that creates serious risk of harm to others. |
| Immediate action + law enforcement referral | CSAM, credible threats of violence, terrorism, and any content that creates an imminent risk of physical harm. No warning. No appeals. Reported to relevant authorities. |
The suspension tier (24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days) is chosen based on the severity of the violation, not simply how many times it has happened — though repeated violations at one tier will generally escalate to the next.
Consequences apply to accounts, not just individual pieces of content. A pattern of minor violations across multiple areas may result in a suspension even if no single violation would have done so on its own.
12. How to report something
Reporting is one of the most important things you can do to keep OYSTR safe. We take every report seriously. Your identity is never revealed to the person you report.
In the app
- Report a Moonshot or profile: tap the three-dot menu on any Moonshot card or profile → Report
- Report a Capsule message: long-press any message → Report
- Report a Capsule or its Admin: Capsule menu → Report Capsule or Admin
- Report a private message: long-press any message in your Inbox → Report
Report categories
- Harassment or bullying
- Hate speech or discrimination
- Threats or violence
- Sexual content
- Self-harm or suicide
- Child safety
- Spam or scam
- Misinformation
- Off-topic or irrelevant
- Doxxing or privacy violation
- Fake account or impersonation
- Other
What happens after you report
- High-risk content (threats, child safety, self-harm): reviewed within 1 hour, auto-hidden pending review
- Moderate-risk content (harassment, hate speech, spam): reviewed within 4 hours
- Low-risk content (off-topic, minor conduct issues): reviewed within 24 hours
We do not share what action we took, but we will confirm that it has been reviewed.
By email
For urgent safety concerns or complex situations that the in-app report flow cannot capture, email privacy@oystr.ca. For child safety concerns, email legal@oystr.ca.
13. How to appeal a decision
We make mistakes. If you believe a moderation decision was incorrect, you have the right to appeal.
Who can appeal
- Any user whose content has been removed
- Any user whose account has been suspended
- Any Crew member who has been removed from a Capsule by a platform-level action (not a Capsule Admin decision — those are internal to the Capsule)
How to appeal
- Go to Settings → Help → Appeal a Decision, or email
- appeals@oystr.ca
- File within 30 calendar days of the decision
- Explain clearly why you believe the decision was incorrect
- Attach any supporting evidence (screenshots, context, clarification)
What happens next
- Your appeal is reviewed by a dedicated Appeals team, separate from the team that made the original decision
- We aim to respond within 7 calendar days
- Possible outcomes: Upheld (original decision stands, with detailed explanation), Overturned (decision reversed, content restored), or Partial (reduced consequence)
- You may file one appeal per decision. The outcome of an appeal is final.
What cannot be appealed
- Decisions related to CSAM or child exploitation
- Decisions related to credible threats of violence or terrorism
- Permanent terminations for the most serious violations listed in Section 4
14. How these Guidelines are enforced
Three layers of moderation
- Capsule-level — Admins and Navigators manage behaviour within their Capsule
- Platform-level — OYSTR’s Trust & Safety team reviews reported content and accounts across the entire platform
- Automated systems — AI-assisted content classification routes new content to the right review tier. Automated systems support human reviewers; they do not replace them for consequential decisions.
Transparency
- When we remove content, we notify the owner with the reason
- When we suspend an account, we notify the account holder with the reason and their appeal rights
- We publish periodic transparency reports on platform-wide moderation activity
- Reporter identities are never disclosed to the people they report
Consistency
We apply these Guidelines consistently across all account types. Being an NFP Partner, a CSR Partner, or a high-engagement Dreamer does not provide immunity from these rules. The same rules apply to everyone.
Evolution
These Guidelines will be updated as the platform evolves. When we make material changes, we will notify all users by email and in-app notification at least 30 days in advance. The current version is always available at oystr.ca/guidelines.
